Professional Objective

As a professional educator, I am seeking the opportunity to convey my passion and knowledge of physical activity and movement, physical and mental health, Developmental and Adaptive Physical Education, and sport to a developing K-12 population. I believe physical activity provides a better quality of life for all people and through practice and reflection I will help to develop students to be physically active for a lifetime.

Philosophy of Physical Education

Teaching physical education is the process of conveying meaningful knowledge and skills to people of all ages so that they may learn and experience the benefits of living an active and healthy lifestyle – Wuest and Bucher, 2009. By providing people opportunity to learn and experience these benefits, as educators, we can hope that they will know how and choose to be physically active for a lifetime.

My professional philosophy has been developed over time through my personal pursuit of an active and healthy lifestyle. In this pursuit, I am constantly engaged in many different physical activities and healthy lifestyle choices. I have known and experienced the benefits that one can derive from making the choice to live this way. Choosing to be active provides a body that is free from disease and functions properly. Making healthy lifestyle choices such as eating nutritious foods, developing positive sleeping habits, and abstaining from the introduction of harmful chemicals and toxins into the body results in a body that is capable of being physically active and feeling good. My choice of living an active and healthy lifestyle has resulted in a passion in its pursuit and has provided me with a better quality of life. My personal lifestyle and experiences have leaded me to pursue a professional career in Health and Human Performance as a Physical Education teacher.
My professional philosophy is guided by three beliefs. First, I believe that an active and healthy lifestyle provides a better quality of life for all people. They must be given the opportunity to learn the value and benefits of adopting this lifestyle so that they may be physically active for a lifetime. Second, I believe that the promotion of an active and healthy lifestyle in the community by providing awareness and education is essential to ensure that all people adopt and support physical education programs. Last, I believe that I have an opportunity to make a difference with my students and in the community. Having that opportunity, it is my duty to utilize my current knowledge and continue my professional development so that I may be an effective and knowledgeable instructor in the field.
Through my endeavor of achieving a higher level of physical fitness and making healthy lifestyle choices, I have been able to live a better quality of life. I get sick less, have more energy, and enjoy life to the fullest. I want to have the opportunity to let others experience what I have experienced. In my physical education classroom, I will provide students the opportunity to learn new skills and sports so they can experience first hand the benefits that they can enjoy from being physically active. Once students experience and understand the changes and positive implications that are resultant of physical activity, they will be more likely to adopt this lifestyle and be physically active and healthy for a lifetime. I can provide my students a variety of different sports so they will have more opportunity to find something they will be willing to continue to play throughout their lives.
Support from the community will be vital to assure that I am able to provide this instruction that is crucial to teaching their children how to be healthy for the rest of their lives. I believe that it is my responsibility to do everything I can to promote an active and healthy lifestyle within the community. In my role as a physical educator, I have an opportunity to extend my knowledge and ideas to my community to strengthen their own knowledge, values, and beliefs about this lifestyle. I believe that my students will need positive role models in the community to support and encourage them as they adopt this lifestyle. With the community behind me, I can ensure that my students are getting support and encouragement from the community as well as ensure that the physical education program at my school is viewed as respected and valued. I will inject myself within the community to spread awareness and promote physical activity to improve the lives of my student's and the members of my community. It is my hope that through the self-realized benefits, which are derived from adopting this lifestyle, my physical education program can grow and make a difference in more lives.
To achieve my personal goals and expectations as a physical educator and to make a difference in others lives, I believe I will have to do everything I can to grow and develop as a professional. It is my responsibility to learn the basic skills necessary to become a physical education teacher and to advance them at every opportunity. I must be a lifetime learner so that I may always learn how to better teach my students and make a larger difference in my community. Technology and research is in a perpetual state of change. Because of that, as I go forward in my career, I need to be in-tune with the changes and advancements in our field so that I may better serve my students and community. I will continue my memberships in WHPE and MNDAPE because they provide many resources to further my knowledge. I have found value in my association with them, learning from the presenters at their conferences. I also plan to advance my education and pursue my masters in education shortly after the completion of my undergraduate work.
Throughout my life I have developed a very strong reverence for living an active and healthy lifestyle. I am very passionate about this field and will do everything I can to convey that passion to my students and community. I continue to enjoy doing all the physical activities I have learned and will continue to learn more. I will always strive to continue my professional development as I move on after college by being heavily involved in this field. I will always assess whether or not my teaching is effective and make adjustments to assure I am teaching this content appropriately.  I believe everyone can benefit from adopting this lifestyle. I will do everything I can to give my students the opportunity to learn and develop their own physical and mental health. I will strive to promote Physical Education in the community by including parents in their child’s education as much as possible. Through the constant pursuit of my passion of being physically active and healthy, and my desire to extend this lifestyle opportunity to my students and community, I hope that others and myself can enjoy and benefit from choosing to live this way for a lifetime.
