Physical Education Program Rationale

Vision
Physical education is an integral part of the district total education program. As such, it is a sequential educational program that provides students with the knowledge, skills, fitness and attitudes necessary to lead a healthy lifestyle.

A physically educated person who participates in health enhancing physical activity:

1.   Demonstrates competence in selected motor skills.
2.   Assesses, achieves and maintains physical fitness.
3.   Applies cognitive concepts in making wise lifestyle choices.
4.   Exhibits appropriate personal-social character traits while participating in physical activity.

Participation in physical education classes contributes to the overall success in the child’s school life because it develops self-confidence, social skills and prepares them as ready learners.

The goals of our Physical Education program are guided by domains of learning:

1.   Psychomotor: The development and application of all physical skills.
2.   Cognitive: Demonstration of understanding and application of concepts in movement and physical education.
3.   Affective: Social aspects of learning, including attitudes, beliefs, and feelings.

Mission Statement
Physical Education is an established academic subject area within the district total education program and we believe it is essential to the well being of our students and in ensuring that they are ready learners.
Physical Education is based upon the acquisition of knowledge and skills that are the foundation for engaging in physical activity. However, the mere acquisition of knowledge and skills is not enough. The mission of Physical Education is to empower all students to sustain regular, lifelong physical activity as a foundation for a healthy, productive and fulfilling life.
Physical Education in the district is a sequential educational program. It is based on physical activities undertaken in an active, caring, supportive and nonthreatening atmosphere in which every student is challenged and successful. Students with disabilities are provided with a learning environment that is modified, when necessary, to allow for maximum participation.
